about

This recording is the second in a series of solo albums--recorded several instruments to a track-- brought on by the desire to continue creating music and collaborate during the 2020-2021 Coronavirus pandemic.

Whereas the first in the series (Self Quarentet) was a collection of improvisations, this work contains eight original compositions with an arrangement of a song written by (and performed by) Allie Robson. Like the first in the series, Self Quarentet: Vol. 2 "Mostly Compositions" is an new adventure in music for me, and and I am indebted to (many more than I'm listing here, but) three American composers and one German composer. They are Roscoe Mitchell, Ornette Coleman, Scott Joplin, and Arnold Schoenberg.

For the most part, I'll leave it to you to discover where the influences lie within each piece, in a couple cases it's obvious. For those who know the work of the great composer and multi-instrumentalist Roscoe Mitchell, you might be familiar with his piece "Leola". "Late, Dark Dawn", the first track on this recording, is not only dedicated to Roscoe Mitchell, but heavily borrows from the harmonic language and vibe of "Leola", and boasts a quotation of the melody of Mitchell's piece. I'd like to state here that Roscoe has been a, if not the primary influence in my playing and writing in the last half decade, and I can't say enough good things about him and his work.

I'd also like to thank Allie Robson, who sings on "Hymn and Her", and was the singer and composer on "I Wanted More From You". She breaths a freshness into a largely heavy aesthetic. We spent a lovely day together in late Autumn (2020) recording, and hanging out. It was an oasis in an otherwise socially limited time. Her singing here is to the point, and not overly affected. Just beautiful, and direct. Again, I'll leave it to you to find other adjectives.

Thank you for listening and I look forward to seeing you in the post Coronavirus world!
